Activity Description:

October's members night meeting includes a facinating talk from John Gurnell and Wendy Finlay on the use of camera traps in conservation.

Camera traps are becoming popular tools for monitoring and studying the behaviour of a variety of different animal species. With respect to terrestrial mammals, large and medium-sized species have often been the focus of attention.  However, it is not clear how useful camera trap methods are for investigating smaller mammals such as mice, voles, shrews and squirrels. In this talk, we critically compare camera trapping and live trapping small mammals from study sites in Surrey and Cumbria, and consider the effectiveness of camera traps to answer questions about the ecology and behaviour of these animals.
