Activity Description:

For full details please see the following message from Steve Kirk, KMG President and leader of the Kent Harvest Mouse Survey. We’d love to see you there.

The RSPB team at Northward Hill on the Hoo Peninsula have been tasked with carrying out a harvest mouse presence or absence survey on this and their other reserves. This a major undertaking given the reserve size. Two of the wardens have been trained in harvest mouse ecology and survey techniques at Wildwood Trust.

Kent Mammal Group has the expertise and opportunity to assist in the search and at the same time potentially obtain records for the Kent Harvest Mouse Survey being run from Wildwood. The reserve crosses four tetrads, meaning four possible new records for the survey. To this end there is a ‘free roaming day’ on Sunday 8th December at Northward Hill. I would like to assist in a co-ordinated search. Can we get a team together? Many KMG members have trained in harvest mouse surveying, but in-the-field training will be provided on the day, so prior experience is not necessary. Car parking is limited, so car sharing is recommended. I suggest we meet at the car park at 10.30am.

How to get there and what to bring with you The car park everyone needs to get to is at Bromhey Farm. This is where the RSPB office is also. Accessible facilities situated in the car park.

The full address is RSPB Northward Hill, Bromhey Farm, Cooling, Rochester, Kent, ME3 8DS. OS map reference of TQ 7683376367.

Leave M2 at junction 1 and join the A228, signposted Grain. Turn left off A228 for High Halstow. In the village turn left onto Cooling Road towards Cooling. After approximately 1 mile, the reserve is signposted as a right turn.

**Also to note is that Cooling road is closed near Cooling village until 13th December, so people will have to come via High Halstow (not via Cliffe). **

Wellington boots are essential. Dress appropriately for the conditions. Bring a walking stick to aid in the search for nests (to move vegetation). A packed lunch is a good idea.
